How To Get More Of The Right People In Your Facebook Group

Ok so let’s start off by me asking you a question you might not be expecting.

Here goes…Are you sure a Facebook group is the right tool for your business?

Remember all the choices available to us as small business owners are optional tools for our tool kit, to help us be the best in our niche. Just like a plumber, carpenter or other trades person. They need the right tools for the job. There’s no point handing a paintbrush to an electrician! Well in our world it’s not as clear cut as that and when we start out we hear all sorts of advice. One piece of advice that I hear more now than ever is this.

‘The best way to get clients is a Facebook group. That’s what you need. It’s easy, you can set one up in seconds and away you go.’

Okay, so yes it does take seconds to SET UP a group. But what about the constant running and maintenance of a group? You’ve got to keep delivering whatever it is you’ve promised on a consistent basis. In ADDITION to everything else you’re doing on your list of marketing activities.

I’m really not trying to put you off and sorry because you read the title of this blog and thought you were going to get some useful tips. Which you are, I promise. In a minute.

Let me just finish off this little side question then I’ll definitely be sharing some really useful lessons on how to grow a Facebook group, from my 6 years of experience.

If you have a group or you’re thinking about it, then consider this:

  • Do my ideal customers want to be part of a community?

  • Do they want to share ideas on a specific subject and support each other in some way?

  • Do you want to create a community?

  • What are you supporting this community with?

  • Is this support best delivered 121 or in a group or both?

I hope that’s helped you be sure about pursuing or not pursuing a Facebook group as part of your ongoing growth plan.

Now let’s assume that you do want to continue with a Facebook group. I’m going to share with you how to get the RIGHT people into your group. I emphasise the word right as there’s no point investing your time in managing a group where the members are not interested in what you have to offer.

So this leads me to my first tip:

1. Ensure you are VERY specific in your marketing WHO your group is for and WHAT they’ll gain from being a member.

You may think you want 10,000 members. Wahooo!! Yeah! I’ve made it, I’ve got to that magic 10k!

Don’t be fooled! I know businesses that have 10k members and they are NOT generating an income from these people. They are NOT converting into customers.

So the motto ‘quality over quantity’ is very relevant right here.

I have 1700 members and over the 6 years since I opened my group I must have declined at least 300 people. Which leads perfectly to my next tip.

2. Use your member joining questions to filter out those that are not right and lean in those that are!

ANd don’t miss a trick here…this is one of your best opportunities to get people onto your mailing list and off FB. What enticing freebie could you offer them to sign up to your mailing list?

3. Write a list of the top 5-10 Facebook groups that you use regularly. Add reasons next to each group as to why you take the time to check into each group. Think about what reasons you are giving your members to check in with your group frequently?

4. Ask your current members to invite other people they know to join your group. Remember to be specific as to who they invite. You don’t want their sister, neighbour, mum etc UNLESS they are your ideal client. Consider offering an incentive for when people invite new members (this does need careful thought so that it is in alignment with your values and represents value to the recipient).

5. Host a challenge or an event like a masterclass or online webinar to draw in a crowd of people all in one go. This can then lead them to a more permanent place with more commitment after gaining value & trust from a low commitment, no risk experience.

And my last tip is this:

6. Make the group an amazing place for members! Then they will love it, they’ll visit often and they will recommend it to like minded people. Getting your customers to drive your marketing for you is the ultimate goal.

Good luck with growing your group with the right people.
