An Alternative View Of Self Care for Female Business Owners

My mission here is to go a bit, or a lot, deeper and give you another view of self care. Let’s go beyond a lie in and a visit to your local beauty spa. Let’s dive into what it really means to look after ourselves - our body, our mind & our soul.

We’ve heard it a million times…. ‘Go for a walk in nature, meditate every day, have a bubble bath, read inspiring affirmations etc etc’

And I’m not dissing this advice, I’m all for it. I’m the first of my friends to book a spa day or suggest an afternoon walking in a forest. I flippin love it. It works a treat for me and it guarantees to fill up my cup, lift my mood and give me a boost. It keeps my mental health healthy & builds my mental resilience toolbox. (By the way here’s a great book by Anya Hurley ‘You Have The Power To Keep Your Mental Health Healthy’ highly recommended you add to your reading list)

I take my self care practice seriously. I don’t mean it’s serious and boring and not fun, I mean I’m committed to it. Every day I do yoga, affirmations, meditation, journaling & gratitude. You might be thinking ‘Okay Sarah… when you do all the other stuff, like run a business, look after a family, and all the usual life admin we have to get done?’ Well it might surprise you, I can do the whole lot in 30 minutes. Yep! Of course when there’s time I’ll spend an hour, although it’s totally feasible in half an hour.

So let’s get back to what we see and hear all around us about self care. Social media shows us images of sunset walks in nature, luxurious log fire evenings reading a book and a perfect tree pose! It could be perceived as indulgent, unnecessary, ‘a treat’ or just plain silliness.

My mission here is to go a bit, or a lot, deeper and give you another view of self care. Let’s go beyond a lie in and a visit to your local beauty spa. Let’s dive into what it really means to look after ourselves – our body, our mind & our soul.

How about we redefine the interpretation of self care to fit our life. Align self care with our life’s purpose, our passions, values & goals.

Have you ever thought about writing your own definition of self care? One that works and fits your life. Here’s a little exercise for you (sorry you thought you were just reading a blog and now I’m asking you to do something!) write one page (if you have a tiny notebook then that’ll only take you 20 seconds!) titled My Self Care Manifesto. Then stick it up somewhere you can see it each day to remind yourself what self care means to you and why it’s important.

I’ve put together 5 alternative ways to view self care, here goes:

  1. Set your own boundaries. Start saying no to requests/demands/expectations that are not in your best interest.

  2. Spend time with people who make you feel alive! Time in their company lifts you up and energises you.

  3. Define how you want your life to be, include all the tiny details, and don’t hold back. Stop letting others write your story, it’s yours. Take responsibility for what you want and begin today creating the life you want.

  4. Be brave, bold and courageous in the decisions you make. Trust your intuition.

  5. Stand up for what you believe in. Be proud of who you are and what you’re passionate about. Do not dilute yourself for anyone.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on self care, why not pop me an email and let me know?

And I’d like to leave you with this quote from Diane Von Furstenberg:

“It is so important to take time for yourself and find clarity. The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself.”

I’m passionate about empowering women to have a voice, have their story heard and follow their dreams in life & business. My mission is to offer innovative, extraordinary & inspiring networking opportunities for female lead businesses.
