Ten Things I Wish I’d Known Before I Started Out

women in business tips

If I was starting my business today, this is the stuff I wish someone had told me. And with a strong tone, so I took it seriously and I’d know that they mean it, like ‘Sarah! Listen up, this sh** is really important. Write it down & live by it.’

My list might be completely different to yours, or it might be quite alike. I’d love to know so once you’ve had a read through my 10 things, pop me a message here and let me know.

Before I share my big lessons of entrepreneurship with you, have a read of this from the fabulous Carrie Green (Founder of The Female Entrepreneur Association):

“Who is she? She is brave, courageous, a real go-getter. She knows what she wants and she knows that she’ll make it happen. She stays positive even when times are hard. She surrounds herself with like-minded people who want her to succeed. She learns all she can to help her strive forward. Nothing is going to stop her from making her dreams come true. SHE MEANS BUSINESS.”

If you are on Day 1 or Day 1000 of your business, Carrie’s words are meaningful & inspiring. And it’s the truth too!

So, talking of when times are hard, let’s look at No1 on my list

  1. Running a business is hard. No doubt about it. You’ll certainly want to quit. More than once.

  2. It will test your willpower, determination & commitment To The Max.

  3. If you want a fast lesson in resilience building then you’re in the right place. Setting up your own business sure is the quickest way to do this.

  4. Be prepared for the unexpected. There will be lots of surprises along this journey. Some delightful & some not so.

  5. Invest in yourself and your business straight away. Okay not everything, all in one go. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Do invest. It’ll save you months, probably years in time and stress.

  6. Curb procrastination and dithering by actively taking positive steps (however tiny) every day.

  7. Check then double check that what you are doing is actually going to help you achieve your goals. I know this might sound silly and you’re thinking ‘well of course I’m going to be doing stuff that is in alignment with my goals’ Trust me, it’s not always the case. Until my coach pointed it out to me, I hadn’t realised that a large proportion of the things I was doing each day were absolutely NOT going to help me meet those goals I’d set. Always check in with yourself (or your coach!).

  8. Start networking before you’re ready. I’ve been running networking events for many years now and I could not tell you how many times I’ve heard people say ‘Once my business is all up and running bla bla bla THEN I’ll start networking.’ I can’t stress this enough: Do It Now. You can’t start too early. Why would you not want to immerse yourself into a world where you can meet other business owners? Pick their brains and begin building a network of supportive like minded individuals. (shameless plug here… come along to one of my events for FREE, click here.)

  9. If your gut tells you a job/client/opportunity is not right for you. For goodness sake LISTEN. However much money you’re offered, it’s not worth it. I know. I’ve been there.

  10. Please please please do NOT work 24/7. You can have a wonderfully successful business WITHOUT working every hour under the sun and neglecting your family & friends, social life and basically everything outside of the business box. You can’t gain that time back. Have a healthy business and you’ll have a healthy you.

I’m passionate about empowering women to have a voice, have their story heard and follow their dreams in life & business. My mission is to offer innovative, extraordinary & inspiring networking opportunities for female lead businesses.
